Scripture: James 3:1-12
Introduction
- A single joke can alter the destination of the Olympics, and a single word can either end or save a person’s life.
- Though the tongue is a small member, it is a powerful fire that can set the entire course of one’s life on fire.
- Is your tongue spewing deadly poison, or is it a spring of water bringing forth eternal life?

1. Do Not Presume to Be Teachers: Heavy Responsibility Behind Privilege
The Apostle James warns, “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” In ancient Jewish society, a ‘Rabbi (teacher)’ held a position of utmost respect. Consequently, many early Christians desired this title merely for status, leading to constant friction and division within the church.
Greater authority demands greater responsibility. Jewish rabbinic literature states, “An arrow kills at forty or fifty paces, but the tongue sweeps through the earth while its mouth is set in the heavens.” A healthy church does not consist of many ‘teachers’ seeking prominence, but rather many ‘servants’ who humbly labor without recognition.
2. A Small Rudder and a Small Spark: The Immense Power of the Tongue
As people age, simple mispronunciations occur, which we can easily laugh off. However, the errors James warns against are of a different caliber. He compares the tongue to a small rudder that guides a massive ship, and a small spark that sets a great forest ablaze.
In 2005, French President Jacques Chirac jokingly remarked that “the only thing Britain has given European agriculture is mad cow disease” and that “you can’t trust people who cook as badly as that.” This reached the media and offended Finnish IOC members. Consequently, Paris lost the 2012 Olympic bid to London by a mere four votes. A casual joke cost a nation a historic opportunity.
3. Deadly Poison vs. Life-Giving Power
Words can destroy. A young contestant on American Idol committed suicide near a judge’s home after receiving harsh, public criticism on the show. Words spoken without empathy became a fatal poison.
Conversely, words possess the power to resurrect dreams. During my first year studying abroad, facing financial ruin with only $10 left in my bank account, I was ready to pack my bags and give up. In that dark hour, words spoken by an elderly deaconess from my childhood echoed in my mind: “You will become a great person.” That simple encouragement renewed my strength to persevere. Similarly, the world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham was a troublemaker in his youth, but his grandmother’s constant affirmation—”You have a gift for drawing people; you will do great things”—completely reshaped his destiny.
Core Illustration and Decision
In the poem A Shepherd’s Confession by Pastor Ko Hoon, he writes that while we complain, we live on earth, but while we give thanks, we already dwell in heaven. Heaven and earth are not far away; they reside within our hearts.
A spring cannot pour forth both fresh and bitter water. We must cease utilizing the same tongue to praise God and curse human beings made in His likeness. When our hearts are governed by the Holy Spirit, our lips become channels of blessing. Let us choose today to speak words of life, healing, and restoration to those around us.
