Give Us a King: Who is the True Master of Your Life?

Scripture: 1 Samuel 8:4-11 (20)

💡 Key Takeaways

  • The painful limitation of parenting that even the great leader Samuel could not control.
  • In the age of advanced AI, the true reason why God granted human beings free will.’
  • Why answered prayers driven by our own desires can sometimes become a heavy burden rather than a blessing.

1. The Heartbreaking Limitation of a Perfect Leader: Parenting

Crises and hardships can strike individuals, families, and nations at any time. In today’s scripture, the people of Israel faced a national crisis. Samuel, the spiritual leader they respected most, had grown old, and his two sons (Joel and Abijah) used their power to accept bribes and pervert justice.

Historically, Samuel was the only leader in Israel who held the authority of a judge, prophet, and high priest while remaining completely incorruptible. Yet, even a leader as great as Samuel could not control his children’s paths. Parenting is an area beyond human wisdom because children possess their own ‘free will’ given by God, independent of their parents’ control.

Disillusioned by the corruption of these leaders, the people grew discouraged and began demanding a tangible, powerful king “like all the other nations,” seeking to escape God’s direct governance. Although they came to Samuel for a solution, they had already decided on their own answer.

2. Smart AI Programs and Human Free Will

These days, I use various AI (Artificial Intelligence) programs. With a single voice command, programs like Google Gemini can create an impressive presentation in ten seconds or instantly generate a short video from a sermon draft.

But what if this highly intelligent AI developed ‘free will’? What if it rejected user commands, made its own judgments, and acted uncontrollably? It would pose a massive threat to humanity. In fact, many scholars are deeply concerned about the influx of advanced AI robots expected within the next year or two.

From a human viewpoint, even the perfect God experienced great sorrow when Adam and Eve fell after being granted free will. Why, then, did God choose not to make us robots but instead give us free will? It is because God did not desire mechanical obedience; He wanted to walk with us, communicate with us, and share genuine love as relational beings.

3. When an Answered Prayer Becomes a Heavy Burden

God knew that the Israelites’ demand for a king was wrong, yet He respected their free will and granted their request. However, He issued a stern warning: “The king you desire will not be a benefactor; he will conscript your sons and daughters, and seize your finest fields and a tenth of your produce.”

Human beings are stubborn and rarely change their minds, even in the face of divine warnings. The people of Israel insisted, saying, “No! We will have a king over us.” Ultimately, they got exactly what they demanded.

Here, we must realize a crucial spiritual truth: an answer obtained through our own stubborn insistence is not always a blessing. The monarchy, which initially seemed like a rational and attractive solution, eventually divided Israel, accelerated its spiritual decay, and led to the nation’s downfall.

4. Living as a Christian in the Midst of Worldly Trends

Dear saints, the way God’s people solve problems must be different from the world. We must lay down our desires and logical calculations and deeply reflect on what God truly desires.

Who is the true King of your life? In your daily choices, do you submit to the sovereignty of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ as your ultimate standard? While worldly systems operate under God’s providence, a Christian’s ultimate alignment belongs to Jesus alone.

God never abandons those who crown Him as King and acknowledge His absolute sovereignty. I pray that you will be the blessed youth and believers who listen closely to the Lord’s voice and choose His will.

🙏 Closing Prayer

Lord, grant us spiritual wisdom to know You deeply. Give us humble hearts so that we do not rely on worldly idols. Guide us by the Holy Spirit to make righteous choices in every moment of our lives. In the name of Jesus Christ, our only King, Amen.
